LIVERPOOL.

The. claims of Liverpool to be regarded as the second port of the world and "Gateway -of. -.the West," are set forth in an interesting article ih the current number of the "Magazine of Commerce." The Liverpool and Birkerihead Docks have a total water area, of 583 acres, and a lineal quayage of 36 miles, while the whole docks estate, extending for seven and a quarter miles on the Liverpool side, and inland for three miles on the Cheshire side of the Mersey, compri-. ses over 1677 acres. , In this area are sixty-three wet docks, nineteen dry docks, and four basins. Liverpool's outstanding feature has, however, always been its Atlantic passenger traffic, and consequently special accommodation has been provided for this trade. This is in the shape of a floating landing stage— the largest of i its kind in the world. !
