ASCENT OF A VOLCANO.

[United Pbess Association.]

Auckland, March 14. Messrs E: Desterre and G. Borne two Auckland pressmen, reached the summit of Ngaruhoe early yesterday morning. The latter part of the ascent was made in a fog. The crater was obscured by steam and fog, but occasionally a momentary glimpse was obtained of the centre of activity. There was a continual roar from the Bteam vents on the floor of the crater. Every now. and then showers of stones and sand, portions. of the walls of the crater, seemed to be missing, but whether it had actually been blown out, or whether that portion was still there and concealed by.: billows of steam, it Was impossible to say. No lava streams were seen. A comparison of the activity noted during the past four days makes it evident that the volcano is quietening.
