SPORTS AND PASTIMES.

.ROWING. v The semi-final for the Nelson Rowing Club's captain's fours was rowed at the Port last evening .between Lucas' and Harley's crews'j under very favourable conditions, the water being' as smooth as glass, and:there being no breeze. As the crews left tho boathouse it was -considered a toss-up as to which boat would be first home, but the result of the race was never in doubt after the start. On tie sound of the word "Row" both boats jumped away at a clinking pace, Harley, if .anything, having a slight advantage, which he gradually, increased, till nearing the wharf t when Lucas came oh with a brilliant spurt, but which he was not able to maintain, and from this out Harley, who was setting a splendid steady stroke, again drew away, and won comfortably by about three lengths. Harley is to be congratulated upon his first appearance as stroke in a club . race. He has a' good style, and has his crew well under command. He was ably backed up by Lawson (3), Heffer (2), and Fanzelow (bow) . The defeated crew comprised Lucas ( stroke), Saunders (3), Stewart (2) , Dougan : (bow) . The final between W. Smith and C. Harley will be rowed on Monday evening, .at 5.30, when an exciting finish may be looked for. . The 'race is to be started punctually to time, and members of the crews are requested to be at the boat house sharp at 5.15.
