The picture represents the scene after the battle of Sedan, and shows the Emperor William 1., Bismark, Moltke, and the Crown Prince Frederick riding over the battlefield. The Emperor and the Crown Prince are represented as trampling the French flag under foot. All French visitors to the B-eichstag regarded the picture as ah affront to their nation, and angry articles appeared iii the leading French' newspapers at the beginningof the session, when the picture was seen for the* first time. With the exception of Chauvinists, Germans, too, regarded the picture as a violation of good taste*, and a majority in'the Imperial Legislature demanded *' its removal, which the President of the Chamber -ordered to bo carried out before Parliament- reasseml)]ed. ;
