Cook. .';... -- About 700 persons attended the_ initial show 'Of the Collirigwobd Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held on Wednesday on the show- grounds. Punctually at 12.30. the officials mounted the. platform which had" been erect- I ed, and tho show was opened by Mr 'Hugh .Page, President ' of the Golden Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association. - He congratulated the district on the step taken, and considered the = district and the officials deserved to be warmly congratulated on that day's., achievement. " . . . Mr,G. H. Allan, .President, in an excellent address, considered that the . day's attendance and the show- itself , entirely refuted' the idea that an association of this kind was before its time in Collingwood.: The mining industry • was on the decline— the farming and - pastoral decidedly in the ascendant.' -He. thanked the judges^ for their gratuitious services, and'- called : for three.; cheers for them; which were heartily V: given. - Cheers were "also, given forthe Golden Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Association and its -worthy President. Telegrams were read from the Hon. R. McKenzie, Hqn.-Dr. Findlay, and Mr A. T. Magiiinity, regretting their un-> avoidable absence from such an'interesting and significant gathering. About fifty visitors ' were present from_ Nelson, and large numbers came in' by. both steamers and road from" Takaka'. . The surrounding districts were. also well represented. Coming to the show ilsolf, the cattle compared very favorably with bigger shows, being strong . > in class and good in quality. -The hght horses were- very, good, indeed. ■ -.v;-In--draught''horses there were some minor defects in classing, but .taken:; a^a"; whole they were very creditable. . Ihe. ' quality of thepigs was distinctly gbodjy. but their condition might .have; been better=r-a defect which will no doubt be remedied iv future shows. A large; v tt'iit 'was dovotud to doiriestic produce, • and what was shown, was. all of really ■ first rate quality.. There was a gather poor entry/of fruit, but the potatoes; were excellent, and fit to be shown m any part of -New Zealand.- Duniig ■;: the day a number of rinteresting photo- :, graphs of officials, exhibits, etc., 'were taken by the Rev. A. E. Parker... The chopping competition was a. spirited event, and the finish exciting. In thesawing competition, .some , hitches in . starting occurred, and this :event was won easily by Batt and- Isaac. The events wore got off .with commendable promptitude. Mr .G.i C. Riley, thecourteous and energetic secretary and treasurer, had a very, busy day. He was assisted hy.a staff of able and wil - ing.officials, who worked j both haid and harmoniously.. To their efforts the day's undoubted success was largely, due. --The sky was . overcast, ram threatened, but. none came. -Ihe -air was delightfully. cdol, and altogether favourable for such an outmg. ' . ■ accidents marred the general happiness, and Collingwood is to beacon-, gratulated upon its first annual show.
