HEROIC DOCTOR. On the Legion of Honour list for January Ist, is the. name of Louis Brazy (writes the Paris correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph"). He is a young house surgeon of the Paris Hospital, the son of a well-known/ practitioner. The decoration has been conferred .upon him by the President of the Republic personally for gallantry in the surgical operat-ing-room. He was assisting in an operation on a natient suffering from purulent pleurisy. A drop of pus splashed and entered the. young surgeon's eye. He knew that the mat-ter-was virulent poison, and that dangerous infection must inevitably ensue unless instant treatment were applied. But he knew also that if the operation in which he was assisting were interrupted, for a moment the patient would go in risk of his life,. no other surgeon being at hand to take his place. He therefore, said nothing, and continued "his duties until the operation. was successfully concluded. Only then did he have" his eye treated, but it was too late, and violent infection set in. Acute inflammation followed, lasting six months, and causing great pain." At length the eye had to be removed". The President or 1 the Republic, hearing of the young ' surgeon's sacrifice, intimated at once that he would use his prerogative of conferring the Cross of the Legion of i Honour, without the advice of his Ministers, in favour of Louis Bazy, who is accordingly gazetted a Knight. GOOD DEAL FOR THE MARQUIS. The purchase by the Taft Vale Railway Company of the Marquis of > Bute's interest in the Cardiff Railway Company has recently been concluded, and the figures that have been published in connection with the transac- > tioH- are very suggestive. The Marquis received £1,900,000 for his property, and in addition to this enormous sum there will be secured to Mmby an Act of Parliament yet to be r passed a half-penny a ton royalty on • all shipments and unshipments pass- " ing through the Bute docks, which are 5 part of the property sold; a ten per a cent royalty on all wharfage, loading J » ,r embarking dues in respect of all goods ; and one half of any rent that may he received by the company, for the lands, warehouses and buildings " comprised in the transfer. The royalties and rents in which the Marquis retains his interest will produce ac- -.' cording to last year's figures, £36,976, |so that the total annual income he ' may expect under the new arrarige- ' ment may be set-down on a 4 per cent basis at about £112,000.
