NELSON CLUB.
This green was the scene of a.-very interesting engagement on Saturday afternoon when eight bowlers appropriately termed 'The Mountaineers," all resident of" Mount street, essayed to challenge the remainder oi' the Club to a two rink match. There was a very fine combination of talent, the Mount street sections being commanded by Messrs Dixon and Swiney, the opposing force being led by Messrs J. Sharp, jr:, (a many feathers match winner), and E. S. Cresswell, the Club's President. The men from' the heights proved too superior for their fellow' club" men, and came out with an eleven point lead in the aggregate, succeeding -at the same, .time in winning at both rinks. The scores wore : Mount street.— Cullen, E. H. Bisley, Baigent, Dixon (s) 23 ; Club.—Hounsell, Moyes, Heaps, Sharp (s) 19. Mount street.— de Castro, Warren, Tasker, Swiney (s) 19 ; Club.—Houlker, Littlejohn, Mansford, Cresswell 12 ~ Grand totals : Mount street 42, The Club 31. ■■-- x, ' • It is quite on the cards that there will be some other such interesting engagements. " • 'Much interest was also centred in the feathers match on the previous Saturday. Mr Jno. Rutherford's team succeeded in bringing about the downfall of the redoubtable Sharp's, whose fame had spread over five successive Saturdays, and on Saturday afternoon there was a very exciting match between the holders and Watt's rink. At the 21st head a tie was registered with the scores at 16. a11. This necessitated a final head,- when the veteran Rutherford -notched "the winning point, the game closing with Heyward, Gould, C W. Brown, Rutherford (s) 17 ; Clutten, Jacka, R. B. Jackson, Watt (s) 16. _■ ; Mrs J. D. Brown supplied afternoon tea. - • # . . . ' On Friday evening,a lecture will be. given at the Club house by Mr W. H. : Phillips, on his Australian experiqnrces. This popular bowler promise's to tell some interesting reminiscences.
