Saturday was aii ideal dav for swimming sports, the weather' beinu warm with an almost entire absence, or wind, while the water was smooth and almost of tepid heat. The Nelson Amateur Swimming. Club held their sports at the Port, the course beinbetween the Anchor Company's wharf and the breastworks. The new wharf formed^the fourth side of the square in which- the snorts were held, and the spectators, of whom there were a Janrc number including many ladies, had a splendid view of the races. Probably by this time next year this area wiil be nlled^in and the. Club wiil have to hnd another place to hold their sports llie entries for the various events were large, and the races were welt contested, the .handicapper bringing the men well together. The polo match between the Nelson and College teams was a very one sided affair the Nelson .players excelling in all departments of the game and winning by nine goals to nil. The events were kept going well, and the sports wero over by a few miiiutes after 5 o'clock Appended are the results :— Custom House Stakes, breast stroke 100 yds: L/ McDonald scr, 1; Horton, 9sec, 2 ; R. These races were, well contested the placed boys in each event being the same. 100 yds Inter-Club Handicap, First heat: Robertsqn, ssec, 1; J. Emerson, scr, 2; time lniin 12sec. Second heat J. Coote, 4sec, 1 ; K. Allen, ssec, 2 ; Final: K. Allen, ssec, 1 ; J. Coote, 2. Emerson was overtaking the handicap ineu rapidly, when Coote, ..who was swimming an erratic course, blocked him. Emerson came up on his wrong side, and the three placed men finished almost together. It was unfortunate for Emerson but the other swimmers were in no way to blame ; time 1 mm llsec. :. ;. •, Spring Board; Dive : Cohdell 1, R. Jones ' 2, Eleven competed. ; 200 yds Flying Squadron: C. Graham's team (C. Graham, Jones;- Warnock, Topliss) 16sec, 1 ; College team (P. Dougan, McNab, Bullard, ; Coote) 3sec, 2 ; Colts' (Robertson, Gabrielson, Johnston, Scully) 9sec, 3. Three other teams entered, . viz, Old Boys', Waimeas, and Switzer's/ and the event proved most exciting ; time 2min 18 2-5 sec. _ •> Polo Championship : Nelson Swimming Club (8 goals) v. Nelson College (nil). As soon as the ball was thrown in the Nelson players dispersed themselves in good positions,, and Emerson shot a fine goal. Almost immediately after starting the same player nearly scored again, the ball going! over the bar. Good passing by Emerson enabled Switzer to shoot two goals in quick succession, and the first spell ended. Nelson 3, College nil. In changing ends Emerson shot another goal,' and almost directly afterwards Switzer sent the ball through the posts from a pass by Emerson. The same player then added another score and McDonald, from long range, added Nelson's seventh goal. Just before time Emerson scored the eighth goal for Nelson. The College team never had a chance from the outset, the Nelson players passing well, and preventin"- the Collegians from handling the ball effectively. Mr F. Bethwaite refereed efficiently.
