RIFLE SHOOTING.
STOKE RIFLES. The Stoke Rifles fired their final competition for Mr Swainson's trophy on the Stoke range last Saturday, when the howling sou-wester that was blowing played havoc with the shooting. The allowance at times was from ten feet to 15 feet. _ Private F. Newport heads the list with the fine score of 86. The following are the highest scores at 500, 600 and 700 yards, seven shots at each range : — 500 600 hp tl. Pvt Newport 27 26 26 7 86 Lance Copl- Fisher 24 30 27 4 85 Copl F. Sharland 32 29 19 — 80 Pvt G. Sharland 29 23- 25 4 80 Pvt Manssen 27 17 24 9 77 Pvt J. Sharland 27 22 23 4 76 Pvt Papps - 28 25 22 — 75 The finals for Mr Swainson's trophy are as follows. Three competitions were held ,two best to count. Private J. Sharland \yins the trophy, with Sergt Jamieson runner up : — Ist 2nd 3rd Pvt J. Sharland 92 83 175 Sergt Jamieson 87 83 170 Corpl Fisber 85 85 170 Corpl F. Sharland • 82 86 168 Pvt G ; Sharland 87 81 168 Pvt Newport" 81 86 167 The Company have also held a competition fora framed picture, the conditions being seven shots at 500 and 700, and 500 and 600. yards respectively: Private Newport, who is improving rapidly, won the -trophy with 117 points.
