THE TREATMENT OF GANGER.

RADIUM AND ELECTRICITY. Some Paris surgeons who have been working in unison lately describe some remarkable results obtained by the use of radium and electricity. Dr Dominici at a meeting of the League against Cancer, presented a number of patients who had beeu cured of cancer. One very interesting case was that of a man who had a deep growth over the upper jawbone. Dr Dominici inserted a gold case containing a bulb with five milligrams of bromide of radium in the effected tissues, and | left it there for four days, with the result that in less than six weeks the ! tumour had been cured. A woman i who had a tumour inside the lower lip was operated upon, but the tumour reappeared. She was then subjected to the radium treatment, and . was : cured in seven weeks. Dr "Wickham j and Dr Degrais showed a number of similar cures. They had treated P'2 case's in the space of three and :•., half years and only six failed to be cured. In a few light, superficial cases an. ppplication of one- hour sufficed to bring a cure. In profound tumo 'rs thsj applied, so to speak, a cross lire.consisting of two bulbs with rvJium, whose action converged on a pivju -point. In very, deep- tumours, I_opeveri radium was incapable oi-pvoduc-ing' rapid improvement. In suoii cases Dr Keating J3avt showed that excellent results could be obtained by means of high tension electric spyiks acting oa cancerous tumouras'subjected to .the surgeon's knife. Tliis Vi'nl- ' guration," as it were, con3bitu ted a ■ new treatment of cancer, whlui liad -given_rema.rkable results. Cho tiitftssion at the meeting made it cU-ar that no one method could be. used ur'versally with success i A base ns rescribed in which a man had five tumours on his right leg. Four of these disappeared under radium treatment, but the fifth grew more mali^iaut. !h Hart's "fulgiiration" method lyas tieti tried, and the fifth tumour w.as 1 avidly cured. In this case the i.'inai's leg, perhaps even his life, was saved. I ;y -the new processes. The" I'aris :' surgeons have been working on the hues described for -someV'years .'n>d the tesults have been go • well estabiifrt.ed that it was at length agreed to publish them for general information.
