NAPIER HOSPITAL.
AN UNFAVOURABLE REPORT. [United Pkess Association.] ,; ■;-•'.' Napier, Feb, 18. At a meeting of the Napier Hospital Trustees, Dr Valintine stated that he had been living at the hospital for the past week and found, that the_ buildings were insanitary and in' disrepair; that the interior did not. show that scrupulous cleanliness which'; should prevail. The wards were not clean. The place was overcrowded^ andthe grounds were untidy and insanitary. Bb also found a lack of harmony between the administrative officers, due to outside interference, and a want •• of definiteness in - regard to duties. Notwithstanding all the.se drawbacks the patients had been well cared for, but 77 patients were too much' for one man. The economic side of the hospital had been neglected, and mismanarement was rife. Out of >19 nurses only two were trained, nurses.," -There was not. that absolute disloyalty to the matron that some people endeaypur ed to make out, and that was shown by the fact that, four senior nurses '-"had offered to stay on if required, after they had passed their examinations. The hospital bbblcs did not .contain enough information j' but this was due to the Secretary being overworked. He recommended the " appointment of an extra medical officer at £200. per annum, and additional help for' the Secretary." . . ■'- -. '' ■. .-. The matron, Miss Florence Edwards, has forwarded her resignation. Mr W: Shrimpton has given £1000 Cowards the erection of a new children's ward, in memory of his son.
