UPPER MOUTERE RESIDENT KILLED.
(From "The Colonist," Feb. 1.)
A distressing trap accident oc> curred at Upper Moutere yesterdayafternoon, at a spot about two miles on the Motueka side of the hotel, by which Mrs Eggers, a resident of the locality, lost her life. It appears that Mrs Eggers was aocompanied by her son and two daughters, the former driving, whea the trap was passed by a motor car, driven by Mr Arthur Maginnitv, of Nelson, wbo was on his wav to Motueka. The horse apparently shied at the car, nnd swerved over a bank at the side, upsetting the trap against the fence. Mr Maginnity, who was travelling at a slow rate, had proceeded tound a eornor some forty yards from the scene, beforo be was apprised of the accident by shrieks irom the occupants of the trap.
He immediately returned and rendered assistance in extricating Mrs Eggers from under the trap, and, seeing that she was seriously injured, he proceeded with all haste back to t»*e Upper Moutere telegraph office, whence he despatched an urgent summons to Dr. Deck, of Motueka, who arrived within half an hour. Mrs Eggers was removed to the residence of Mr Bensema'nn, where she, died from shock at 6.30 last evening. The other occupants of the trap were uninjured, and neither horse nor vehicle suffered damage.
The accident cast a gloom over the district, where Mrs Eggers was well known. She leaves a large family of young children. Much sympathy is also expressed for Mr Maginnity, who bears fche reputation of being one of the mosfc careful and considerate motorists in the city.
