A WARNING TO CONSTABLES.
Wellington, Feb. 7. At the Supreme Court yesterday, John Pechugin and Stephen Ferdi- S nand were acquitted of a charge of « assaulting a Ohinaman. Mr Justice s Cooper remarked as to the constable ° r dißolosiDg certain alleged facts, J; which were not told in the Magistrate ; s Court. Hits Honour empha-' •* sised that it was the duty of every constable when a prisoner was taken c before a * Magistrate to keep back ° nothing in giviDg his evidence. In ' the present case it was quite open to the jury to aocept the constable's evidence if it saw lit, but he wished j: again to emphasise that the constuble's evidence was open to very severe criticism.
