CITY COUNCIL.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night, when there were present : His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. Piper) in fche chair; and Councillors Grace, Hampson, McConchie, Neale, Bisley, Firld, Kobertson, and Turner. Payments were passed amounting to .62225 16s 4d. The Mayor reported that the debit balance at the Bank was £18,874 19s lid. Correspondence was read ana considered; • Mr Blair and 24 others, wrote requesting ti:at a lamp be placed at tho corner of Franklyn and Vanguard streets. Cr Grace pointed out tbat the matter was dealt with in the Finance Committee's report. Mr W. F. Worley wrote, urging the Council to consider the Rodiog river water supply scheme, not only as affording an abundance of water, but giving cheap power for electrical purposes. On the motion of Cr Hampson, the letter was referred to the Finance and Works Committeea. C. J. Tbe Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote tbat ihey required £40, and fchat all tbe new gear was to hand. The Vestry of .All Saints' Cburoh wrote, requesting that the name of the street, whioh had been affixed to the Sunday Sohool building in ToiToi Valley, be removed.— Referred to the City Engineer with power to aot. A ratepayer wrote re connection with the sewerage.— Rnferred to tbe Special Drainage Committee. .Messrs Buxton and Co. and others applied for the usual certificate regarding closing houis.— Granted. - Mr W. Lock applied for a second hand dealer's license. —Granted. MrE. Ou the motion of Cr Noale, it was resolved tbat the request be granted on condition that Mi Cnisholm' 'give a bond for JE2S that he will remove the old house, and conneot the new ones. A letter re proposed new road to Britannia Heights was referred to the Works Committee. -" Tho resignation of Mr James Lucre as a Fire Inspector was accepted. , Mir H. V. Gully was granted a certificate as an accountant. On the motion cf Cr Field, tbe Finance Committee's report was adopted. It recommended: 1. Re Mr Petrie's letter; that' a subscription list be kept in the City Council office, and subscriptions be invited by advertisement towards a contingent of school cadets being sent. to Kngland. 2. That Messrs Ross and Glendming be charged on the average consumption of 'water duriu*? the hut three months. . 3. That a lamp be placed at the corner, of Franklin and Vanguard streets. '& ' That all works not urgently' necessary be*deferred till the end of the financial year. 5. That the City Engineer have theneoessary survey made of (juariy road. 6. Tbat the Mayor and Councillors Hampson and Field be appointed a Special Committee to confer with tue Town Clerk with fereace to an improved system of keeping the accounts in both the Town Clerk's and City Engineer's offices. The Public Works .Committee's report, was adopted on the motion of Cr Field. The report recommended: — 1. Re Mr Gray, no recommendation to make. 2. That Mr E. V. Johnson be informed that the Council has sufficient- Boulder Bank gravel at present. ,3. .TMat'Mr Esfccourt's application be granted on condition 'of a proper, agreement.- 4. Re Mr McGavin Thompson's letter in refevence to bathing at Tab una, that the* - Council had decided to erect a shed that is ' already available, but, seeing thafc the question. of it. having been reported that sharks have been seen on the beach, has arisen since, thb matter has been referred to the Council. 5. That a driver's license has been granted to P. G. Liddell. The City Engineer reported : — Sewerage: The works in hand are progressing favourably. The gangs are now employed completing the Tasman street swallow gravitation area, aud have commenced on tbe Hope street swallow gravitation area. New 'power station. This work iB well forward; and will bo completed wifcbin a' week after the arrival of tbe compressors, wbicb should be here at an early date. >. Works : The metalling of Cambria street is well forward, and should be completed in a few days. Many works of minor importance have been receiving attention. High level water supply: Tbis work is progressing fayouraoiy, and should: be completed by the end of next week. The report was adopted. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the city was free of infectious diseases. Or Turner considered that the traffic ahould be regulated over Trafalgar street North when big gatherings take place at Trafalgar Park. Dr Hampson quite agreed with Cr Turner's suggestion. Tbe Mayor considered tbe police should aot on such occasions. He moved in that direction! Cr Grace thought it would only be a temporary expedient, * and 'ques tioned the wisdom of the expenditure. Cr Robertson remarked that all the water would have to be pumped out of tbe sewer - again, and if much water was sent into the sewer the pumps would be liable to be blocked. On the motion of tbe Mayor, the matter was referred to tbe_Works Committee. Tbe Council then adjourned.
