It is stated ';:here that Mr Romaine's engineering expert, referred to in the- now notorious memorandum, censuring tbe methods at tbe Addington Railway - Workshops, is a prominent member of the Legislative Council. ; A heated and almost acrimonious discussion occurred at the Harbour Board meeting yesterday. The question was whether certain figures collected by the Board concern ing revenue collected .by the Railway Department; at the Christohurch-Lyt-telton branch;'' which are to be part of the report being prepared with regard to the canal scheme, should he made public at once, before the report was completed, in view of the fact that an erroneous set of figures bad been; giyen publicity ---in the newspapers. Mr Friedlander threatened that if the Board did not publish the figures at once he would re- ■ veal-'them at a meeting at Ashburton tb-uight. It was pointed out that this would.be a gross breach of privilege, but Mr Friedlander persisted in his intention to defy \ the Board. A motion to rei eal the rigures was lost.
