GOLDEN BAY AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

> FOURTEENTH ANNUAL SHOW. - - • — — _ A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. (By our Special Reporter.) President: Hugh Page. Vice-Presi- -.- dents:' R. Hyland, James Page, F. Gaukrodger, and A. Hodgkinson; -Hon. Treasurer : W. J. Reilly. Secretary: W. G. Humphreys. .Auditors: W. C. Baigent andThqs. ;. Symes. Committee : Dr. Adams, Eustace Baigent, R. Bensemann, ' D. Barnett,. W. Campion,- J. L Harris, M. Hunter, T. Hyland, A. Haldane, ' A. J. Kemp, R. Kirk. • James Manson, W. Mockett, W. J. Newport. J. G. Page, Charles Page, Frank Page, J.F. Rose, Fred Reilly, J. B. Sadd, A. Whelham, F. Windle, H. Dyer, Harold Spar- ' row. ' ■ '■.-.-.;■ ; Takaka, Feb. 1. .. The^ fifteenth .annual: show of ■-■ the -Golden' Bay A. arid P. Association . -took s place here -to-day in beautiful The attendance was large, , , settlers coming: from all parts of the Waimea- and Golden Bay districts to • attend the' gathering. Among tfie "visitors- was the "Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister for Public Works and Mines, who opened the show. (A synopsis of his remarks has already been published); ■' ; . „ '...■• ' . 'In introducing the hon. gentleman', Mr Hugh Page, President of the As-sociation,-thanked the people of the district '• for ' their hearty co-operation and support throughout the year, as well as their attendance,! which' practically assured the success of „ the • show. 'The object, he said,: of this I and kinded associations, was. not so much as to provide the people with • a day's amusement as" to promote the agricultural education of. the people, and to assist in. fostering and developing the .sister industries, which must be acknowledged toY be not .only the next important in this district, but also of the Dominion. The Government had long since recognised the importance of the industries by offering e,very facility for the exportation of farm produce, by importing -pure' bred stock and placing them -at the disposal of the people, by placing agriculture on the syllabus as* a technical subject to; be taurrht in the schools, and no better ' ocular of the wisdom of 'it v co-uld be had than by a visit to tlie j frard^hs attached to' tEeir. District HigK School,- each; plot of which can be best doscribod as a miniature experimental farm. ', That the . Committee, nf the 10ca1. "... association -. was fully alive to these important : fea- ■ tufes was evidenced : -by the' liberal 'mnriner in wJiich it had catered toinduce competition in . the various secWpns of the industries which, came -•."'.under' its scope, ; and ■ while it was

quite incapable to cater for an. exhibition on the extravagant scale of the metropolitan ones, for a district with 1600 population, tho Association at least could claim to have been the means of improving cattle, horses, sheep and pigs in the district, not to mention the numerous small exhibits. Mr Page then introduced the Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister of Public Works and Mines, and -took the opportunity of tendering him publicly their unanimous congratulations on his recent appointment. After the Hon. R. McKenzie had opened the show, cheers were given for the Minister and Mrs McKenzie. The entries totalled. a few less than nine hundred, a slight falling off from last year, but the quality was well maintained, and in some classes there was an improvement. The entries for light horses were numerous, and the ring events proved very attractive. Although competition was keen,- the events „w ere all completed before 5 o'clock.' Tho draught horses were an improvement on those shown last year As a class, the sheep were excellent, the quality being well maintained. -The winning pen of fat lambs was the best seen in . the district for some time* Cattle and pigs were \ good. Mr J. L. Harris was awarded the championship for a Shorthorn bull, and a similar honour was conferred on Mr A. Hodgkinson for a Jersey cow. A protest was lodged against the judge's decision in the Jersey heifer class, the prize beast .being alleged to be, over age. Dogs were a very good class, and the poultry were fairly good for this time of the year. An undoubted feature of the show was the produce tent. Entries for all classes were very numerous, and the judge experienced considerable difficulty in awarding the prizes. There' were some very fine vegetables shown, and the display of fruit was very tempting. The .school exhibits were quite an attraction, and the Minister, in his opening remarks, took occasion to congratulate the children on their successful efforts. The chopping and saiyang r events also excited considerable; interest. • The Committee, Mr Hugh : Page (the President), and Mr 6. Humphreys worked indef atigably to ensure the success of the show, and' our representative desires to express his thanks to these officers for their courtesy. • Appended is the prize list :— '.-.-: DRAUGHT HORSES.
