DEATH OF THE GUARD.
PASSENGERS' MHtACULOUS ESCAPE.. .-?■ (Received Dec 10^ 0.40 a.m.) Sydney, Dec 9. •Costello, the guard, died of the injuries he received in the Blue Mountains accident. The passengers had a miraculous escape. The runaway vehicle dashed down a grade of 1 in 40 at a terrific pace. The passenger cars which were at the end of the train became the foremost on the mad rush downwards when the breaking occurred. The derailment of the wagons following the cars stayed their forward progress and saved the -lives of the passengers. • The train was laden with copper, wool and: chaff. The wool burned fiercely when the fire .broke out, Hundreds of men working on a deviation on the line threw earth on the fire and extinguished it.
