NELSON DIOCESAN SYNOD.

Yesterday afternoon the Synod resuinsjd at three o'clock, the Bishop of Nelson in tbe chair. On the motion of the Rev. N. A. ifriberg, the Standing Orders 2 nud 3- wpre suspended, after which it was resolvfid that tbn Synod eit at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The Synod went into committee to consider the Bill to amend the Pension bund Act, Mr A. T. Maginmty in the chair. Trie Bill was reported to the Synod with amendments, and tbe Rev. J P. Kemptborne gave notice that he would move the third reading on the next Cay. - ' Archdeacon Grace moved — That the cost nf living having very much increased of recent years, this Synod respectfully requests the Bishop after consultation with the Standing Committee, to make a strong appeal as early as may be convenient to himself, to the laity of the Dioces*, to use tbeir best endeavours to bring the stipends of the clergy and other stipendiary workers of the Church up to an adequate living wage in every lustance. Dr. . Mackay seconded the motion. Messrs Maginniy, Greeatoood, White and U. J. Jones strongly sup-^ ported tbe same. All agreed that the clergy's stipends were quite inadequate, and something should- be done in the matter. x Toe motion was carried unani mously. ..'■.'■ The Synod resumed at 7:30 p.m. the Bishop of Nelson in the chair. The Rev. J. R. Dart, the clerical secretary and Mr Trapnell. the lay secretary, were alao present. The Synod wont into committee to further consider tna Standing Committee's report. With regard to the (Jnurcb of England general mission in this Dqmioion it was stated that no definite arrangements bare as yet been raadf, but most probably a couunenoeinent will bo made shortly to prepare thß way. The position of the funds in promises and cash is about £1151 for the whole of the Dominion. Of this the Nelson Diocese has a total of about £170. A meeting of Bishops would probably be held in tbe Dominion in February when doubtless definite arrangements fot the mission would be made. . Archdeacon Grace were chosen as the clerical membero of the committee. Messrs Trapnell, Ue Caatro, Wilson Heaps, . b". H. Richmond and l>r Mackay were elected as taB lay membdts. The Synod again went into committee on tbd Standing Committee's report, when considerable discussion ensued as to the proposed grants. Eventually tbe grants were passed as follows — Tnkaka, Collingwood, Kaikoura, Suburban North, Cheviot, Amuri, each £16; Karamea, Grey Valley, Lyell, Murchison and WaimaDgarca, each £10; Peloros £lH0s; Brunnerton, £12 Charleston £9 10s; JMotueka £7; total £176. , ;- .
