PROFESSOR RUTHERFORD. (Special to "The Colonist.") . Christchujchj Nov 25. Professor Rutherford, who has been awarded the chemistry Nobel prize, is well known in Christchurch.. He has many friends, here -v?ho will rejoice 'at tho latest< success 'he "has added to his Very brilliant- career. The honour that has~ been conferred upon him is reflected upon Canterbury College, where ho was partly ; educated. He was born in Nelson province, where his parents resided for some iime. He attended; Nelson College and later; on came to. Christchurch, where ho married Miss Mary G. Newton, a daughter pf Mrs Newton, who still resides . in ' this city. After a successful University career he went to Cambridge; and took further honours. There, having obtained an Exhibition Science Scholarship, he prosecuted researches, at the Cavendish Laboratory, and entering enthusiastically into ;.<'ho 'problems connected with radium has added largely to the world's knowledge in that respect. For over ten years he has been regarded as one of the leading authorities on radio . activity. Working in conjunction with the curies, Professor Soddy and other notable investigatorsj liis work in radio aciivity has heen of a very original character, and his experiments have been characterised by sinking brilliancy. . They honour that has just been conferred upon him of course is the highest has received, -but his work has already been recognised. Five" years ago, for instance, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. In the following year he delivered a Bakcrian leciiu re, before the " Royal Society,' and this was followed by his receiving the Royal Society's Rum--ford medal in 1905. For some years he was tho Mac Donald Professor of Physics at tho McGill University at Montreal, but last- j r ear he was appointed Langworthy Professor and Director of Physical Laboratories in the University at Manchester,, a position which he still "holds. He has pxiblished a few books and a larce number of articles and papers on radio activity.
