"... j Two hundred and fifty peers met at Lord Lansdowne's house, and overwhelmingly resolved to reject the Licensing Bill to-day, because -: it would not advance the cause of temperance, and violated every principle of equity in its' dealings with numerous classes whoso interests were; affected.Mr W. Redmond's Bill to remove Caiiholic disabilities and alter thp Accession Oath was read a first time by 233 to 48, after Mr McArfch.ur's opposition, based on the argument ■ that the measure struck at the guarantee of Protestant succession, and also that Roman Catholics never exoended toleration, to others.
