FIGHT WITH AN OCTOPUS.
A diver named Martin Lund had at San '.on September 28th last a thrilling adventure that recalls an incident in Victor Hugo's "Toilers of tlie Sea." Soon after Lund had descended into the hold of a sunken vessel ho disturbed an immense ootopus, which seized his leg below the kneo with a tentacle five inches in' diameter. Almost immediately another tentacle encircled his thigh. The diver chopped frantically at the bsast with his knife, and signalled by the lifeline to bo raised to the surface. Two more tentacles slipped out of the darkness, one of which gripped Lund's neck. The efforts of the men . on the surface -to raise him threatened to drag off his helmet, and ho was compelled to signal them to desist. -•..■. ' •• Lund, who had only his left hand free, fought like a madman, hackng at the tentacles until he practically crippled his enemy. With ~a final effort the octopus drew Lund to its Tnouth and the diver repeatedly drove ms knife into its head until ' it was dead. When Lund was dragged to the surtact he was in a fainting condition. Ihe octopus was afterwards raised and was placed on exhibition.
