"BANDE MATARAM."

An Indian Judge writes:— The exclamation "Bande Mataram" is better rendered into English by "Worship the^Mother" than by . "Hail, Motherland," for the word "Bande" is an imperative which governs a- direct object, in this case "Mataram." -\ The mother in question is the goddess Kali, and the worship proper to her is a human sacrifice. - Under British administration this worship (if performed at all) can, of course, only be done with the utmost secrecy; but what is signified when one Bengali calls to another, '-'Wor- - ship the Mother" at the passing of a European is plain enough, even without tho exegesis of the bomb- * thrower.
