Nov. 22. .Thoroughgood succeeded in retaining the title of champion of Australia, by easily defeating • Wbelc'h, although tbe New Zealander made a plucky- effort. The race was rowed ■on the Kaymbnd. Terrace course, Huntsr River. Heavy rain delayed tbe 'start and also interfered with the attendance. Several steamera followed the race, but the gate •a'as not a heavy one. Whelch von tbe toss. Thoroughgood got the best of the start and quickly established a lead of half a length, which he increased to two lengths before the ■quarter, mile was reached. Prior to thia point the Australian crossed into. Whelch's water, rowing ahead andgiving him bi3 wash. The race waß slow. Tdoroughgood dipping 28 to Whelch' 32 strokes. Nearing the mile, which "occupied about six minutes, Whelch spurted and drew almost level. Tboroughgood,. responding, went away.agaiD, leading liy two lengths at tbe mile and a half, the time being 9 rriin 50 sees'. ■ --.again the New Zealander spurted, and cut -the lead down to a length. It ■ was apparent, however, that Tborougbgood, who was still in the New Zealanier's water, both being close inshore, had bis measure.
