TAKAKA. (Fioni our own Correspondent. ) The election was conducted very quietly indeed here this time. For one thing the result was a foregone conclusion for Mr R. McKenzie, and though it was known that the no license vote would be fairly stiong, it was generally conceded that a three-fifths majority was too hig a hurdle, as proved the case. Altogether the election of 190S naH proved about the tamest thing. in its line everyone through here. Early in the evening a light lain began to fall, and continued steadily all through *b/e night, and is still going on. This will be a perfect God-send to Takaka, as we bavo been having n> terribly dry spring, and the outlooK was beginning to look serious. If the rain continues all to-day, and it appears certain, it will set the Valley up for the season. On Monday morning last an oldish dwelliog hou3e at Waingaro, owned and oacupied by Mr Wm. .Barlow, senior, was destroyed by lire. The oecupanta were very old and worthy settlers here, and general sympathy is expressed at their loss.
