THE EFFECT OF A NO LICENSE VOTE ON BREWERIES.

'-•i — * : So much misconception is abroad as to; the effect of: carrying No License that: it s.eem desirable to set out the facts clearly. It is quite usual- to hear people say "that if No License is carried they will bo able to obtain beer, direct from the breweries, and wine and spirits from the, merchants and storekeepers'. This is- a great mistake. Should No License be carried in Nelson it will bo impossible, legally", . to purctias liquor in the city at all. The vote applies not only to the open bar but. to every imaginable license for .the sale of liquor, wholesale or retail; and' neither merchants, storekeepers, nor brewers will be allowed to sell. : : „ In order to obtain liquor in a No License area it is necessary to order it'*' from ;a LICENSED DISTRICT, vtmd^even 'then notice of the transac- ; tign;,must' be sent to the clerk of the' .Cpurt^who must enter a record' in V'Jbook' kept for -the purpose, which ■*is,fat;' all times open to the. inspection of tho 'police. ;.- ;It is also clear tha the cost of beer etc}, obtained from outside a No License District will be greater than it-is at' present under License. •It cannot be too widely known that every consumer of liquor in a No License district is ipso facto a suV pect'and if the police deem the quan-tity-supplied him too large for his „own use they can search his house and confiscate all liquor found. When charged before -"-he Court, the onus js^placed on the consumer ' of proving that the liquor .was not kept for sale, an almost impossible task. This is No License. ■ - • 4627
