EMPIRE CUP COMPETITION.

A SCORE QUESTIONED. Wanganui, June 2. Colonel Sommerville writes to the "Herald" questioning the bona fides of the East Loadon Rifle Club's phenomenal score of 524 in the Empire match. He says that from long experience in rifle shooting aad a knowledge of what can be done with the .303 rifle, the score of 824 under Bisley conditions is practically possible. He points out that the best score, ever made at Bisley under the same conditions was 779 in 1903, and the next best was 771 ; but ,he recognises these scorns were by I eight selected men. The colonel adds that in 1905, for example, about 2500 shot in 'the hrst stage of the King's Match at Bisley, and the eight highest scorers made only 814. The "Herald," commenting on the letter, says that the atmosphere in South Africa, being very dry and singularly free from refraction, shows all objects with remarkable clearness, and the paper suggests that this may account for the truly phenomenal snore.
