PISCATORIAL EXPERIMENT.

A curiou9 fish story was told by Dr. Bernard Hollander in a lecture at the Mall Hall, Kensington, ou tho "The Mental. Function of the Brain. ' ' A pike which was separated from a number of minnows placed. in the same tank-, by a glass partition for three months, made fruitless efforts to catch the minnow, repeatedly dash ing its nose against the , glass. The pike, .however, having learued that its efforts were of no use, finally discontinued them. The sheet of glass was then removed, but the now firmly established association of ideas never became disestablished, for the the pike never afterwards attacked the minnows, though it fed voraciously oq all other kinds of fteb. The pike reminded him, added Dr. Hollander, of people who spend half their lives in assimilating obsolete ideas of other people, aad tbe other naif in sticking to ftiese ideas a3 the only possible

Mr jair-ns Austin, the senior police court magistrate at Toledo, Ohio, in order to ensure that prisoners were accorded fair and humane treatment, underwent exaotly the same routine as a petty thief for twentyfour hours. Mr Austin describes bow he sentenced himself to a day's imprisonment. "I rode shackled to the convict prison," he says, "because otber*prisoners are taken in that manner. 1 was measured, book ed, fed, and given a cell, and worked as a prisoner. The time I spent alone in a cell has rectified my formar views of time, for I know there are more than sixty minutes in an hour when you spend that hour in a cell, with nothing to smoke, or read, or write, and no one to talk to, and only the slant of the shadows on the wall to let you know what lime it is." In consequence of his selfimposed sentence Mr Austin recommends a number of reforms.
