THE COLONIST. THE COLONIST Published Daily-(Morning). Nelson, Saturday, Mar. 7, 1908. NEWS OF THE DAY.

The oalculnt-'ois of som.3 or the retailers, wht m tended keeping their premises open until half- past nine last evening were npsat when they were informed by the Inspector of Factories that until their previous requisition stating their intention to close their premises at 6 o'clock ou certain evenings in tbev.-oek, including Fridays, was revoked, they could not remain open ii the evening. The result was that very Luv shops were open for business— drapers, clothiers, bootmakers, cycle dealers, etc.. being closed. A few contented them selves with lighting up their windows, but tbe town was very quiot. few people being about— -a striking contrast to Saturday night; Afc the City Council meeting Infit ■<*'■?■• in:; requisitions were received i..,.-a majorities of retailers, asking for permission to remain open on Friday evenings, and these were endorsed, so that such a confused half and-half 9tate of affairs as existed last night is not likely to occur again. McCabe, the Waikato hermit, has been found dead. For upwards of 20 years McCabe has dwelt in the hills to the westward of Matamata. He existed in a strange manner, resembling the ancient hermits. What caused him to separate himself from other human beings is unknown. He was, however, the victim of various delusions, one of the most fau.iliar being that he was the owner of t-he Matamata estate and all of the flocks and herds thereon. 1

The concert given by the Clara Butt Rumford Concert Co. on Tuesday afforded great pleasure to the vast •audience. One of the most pleasing items was the duet by Madame Butt and Mr Rumford, Ci The Keys of Heaven," in. which the male singer pleads for the hand of his ladylove, and -offers gowns, carriages, and black horses in vain, being ultimately accepted when he offers the "Keys of his heart." In Nelson there is no occasion for such pleading. If he had told her that he would furnish at Lock's, she would have accepted readily. For Lock holds a fine, up-to-date stock, and has equipped hundreds of happy homes. At Lock's you get the widest choice of fm:niture and furnishings, Harland's celebrated pianos. Carpenter Co. organs, and the wondeiful Atlas sewing machines. Lock's prices £re the lowest.
