WARNING TO FACTORY OWNERS.

At the' Magistrate's Court at Motuoka on Thursday last before Mr IT. Eyre Kenny, S.M., Mr S. Tyson, inspector of Factories, proceeded against John Robert Haggle, tailor, for failing to pay wages fortnightly. The Inspector said it was a very bad case, and the Act clearly provided that the wages must be paid fortnightly. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined jG3 3s and costs 13s.

The same defendant was also charged with failing to keep time and wage books. The Magistrate said that the Act clearly provided that records in factories must be kept, and the Government provided extracts from the Act. so that there could not be any excuse for a breach of this natuie. A line of 10s was inflicted,' with 13s costs.

I Frank Waghorn, sawmiller, of Ngatimoti, was also charged with failing to pay wages fortnightly, and a fine of £5 was inflicted w ltb 21s costs. The same defendant was fined 10s, and costs £1 Is, for failing to keep time and wage books. The excuse put forward was that he employed u book-keeper, and it was the' latter who had failed to enter up the records in proper form as required by the Inspector. The Magis trate said that tbe employer was responsible, not his book-keeper. He (defendant) might possibly havefredress against his book-keeper for failing in his duty. At t»ie same time he must inflict a penalty.

The Inspector al.so brought three cases against factory owners for recovery of wages overdue, amounting to £11 10s. The Magistrate ordered tbe wages to be paid forthwith, with co9ts of Court, amounting to a guinea.
