ST; MARY'S CONCERT SOCIAL AND DA NOB. Although the attendance at the Druids' Hall last evening was not large, owing no doubt to the prevalence of influenza and counter attractions, the conceit, social and dance given by the congregation of St. Mary's Church, proved very enjoyable. The first part of the eveniDg's entertainment took the form of a concert, and a very pleasing programme of songs and choruses was presented. -About thirty lads from the Stoke Orphaage, who have Deen trained by Miss Driscollj sang soin& choruses really well, and were a credit to their teacher. The public expressed their appreciation of their eForts by warmly applauding themj and on two occasions they were encored. Mrs (Dr) Wright sang in public for the first time in Nelson, rendering "If I Built a World for You." She is the possessor of a sweet and powerful mezzo-soprano voice, and sings with much expression. In response to the hearty applause which followed her rendering of her opening number she sang a charming coon song "You area White Little Girl" which completely captivated the audience. Miss Scott was warmly applauded for her rendering of "Idle Words," and Miss Cohen sang "A May Morning" most acceptably, while Miss Driscoll and 'Mr Bert Tasker gave a very pleasing rendering of the duet "Maying." Mr Tasker also sang "Peg Away," eliciting hearty applause, and Dr.' Wright received an encore for a humorous song "Slattery'a Mounted Foot*" demonstrating his versatility as a vocalist by responding with "Alice, Where Art Thou," whicn was also highly appreciated. The majority of the accompaniments were played by Miss Driscoll, Mrs Wright and Mr Shone also assisting. At tbe conclusion Mr M. Levy, on behalf of the management, thanked the singers for their services and the public for their patronage. Refreshments, provided on a very liberal scale by the congregation, were then handed lqund, after which the floor wa3 cleared for dancing, Miss Fowler supplying excellent music, and Mr Levy making an efficient M.C. The Stoke Orphanage boys, who came in from Stoke by train, were regaled with refreshments after their vocal efforts, and departed for the institution in the motor 'bus highly pleased with their outing. The Committee, we learn, may repeat the concert on a later date.
