The usual monthly meeting of the L.0.L., No. 51, willtake place this evening. Influenza is still very prevalent in the city and country districts, but the epidemic now shows signs of diminishing, fewer fresh cases being reported yesterday. The attendance at country schools has. been very seriously affected, and at Richmond this week only about thirty out of one hundred and twenty pupils were able to attend school. At Stoke School the average attendance this week has been about thirty, out of over eighty on the roll. It is estij mated that between two and thiee thousand persons in the city have fallen victims to the complaint. The Stoke School concert has been postponed for a few weeks owing to the epidemic. A flower show and sale of work under the auspices of the Ladies' Guild of the Presbyterian Church will be held in the Druids' Hall on September 11th and 12th. A "gift afternoon" was held last week in the Church Hall, and was largely attended. Numbers of gifts were received, and these will be sold at the different stalls at tha sale of work. Copies of schedule for the flower show can be obtained from Mesdames P. Bond, A. Crawford, G. Wastney, and Miss M. Fleming. Au adjourned special meeting of the Acclimatisation Society-was held at the Camera Club's Booms last evening, Dr. Gibbs presiding. About twenty members were present. The rules, as revised by the Committee, were submitted to the meeting, and with slight amendments were confirmed. The shield which was presented to the Waimea Rifles last evening was the handiwork of Messrs Brown and Kerr, and consisted of a beautiful totra knot, supplied by Messrs Page and Sons. The shield itself is one of the finest yet. turned out in Nelson, and is splendidly decorated with plates representing- various characters. The design and the work of engraving is of a very high ~eha racter. The Shield will hi on view in Messrs Brown and Kerr's window forj a few days.
