ACTION BY RICRMOND BOBOUUU COUNCIL.

At a special meeting of the Kichinond Borough Council held on Friday evening last,, at wh."ch all tho rnenihers were present, a letter was read from the Hon. Secretary of the Inland Communication League requesting the Council's co-operation in sending a deputation to Wellington to urge upon the Government the matter of railway extension to the Hope.

The Council was most unanimous in their endorsement of the League's action. It was pointed out that every year emphasises tho need of this railway, inasmuch as settlement has largely preceded tho line, and owing to the fact of so much of the availablo lands in other parts being already taken up, the attention of intending settler is more and more turned to this district. The opinion was freely expressed that it would have been much wiser policy for the country at la.rge, if the tunnel, for which tho contract has just been signed, had been held in abeyance for a few years, and this much needed line vigorously pushed forward in - stead.

Tha following resolution was moved by the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Papps and carried unanimously: "That this Council heartily endorses the action of the Inland Communication League in their efforts to promote the extension of the railway to the Hope, and joins with them in sending a deputation to Wellington to urge the matter upon the Government."

After some difficulty in finding a Councillor who could spare the time to go to Wellington, Cr, James Hunt in response to a request, undertook to join the deputation. Cr. Wilkes also agreed to join provided he found it possible so to arrange his business as to permit of his absence.

Adverse comment was made upon the action of the Government in tho matter of wharf extension, and it was felt that the Government were alienating the support of Nelson by their slippery treatment of tho district in these matters.
