AMUSEMENTS.

THE JESSIE MACLACJUT-AN CONCERT SEASON. The farewell visit of Miss Jessie Maclachlan, the Scottish soprano, which commences here on Saturday nest at the Theatre Royal, will afford an opportunity of hearing a lady who has achieved a high position to-day as a vocalist. On this occasion, the inclusion in the company of Mr Douglas Young, a Scottish tenor, of whose voice Ireport speaks highly, enables concerted music in the shape of vocal duets to form a feature of the programmes. As a singer of such well-known songs as "Blue Bonnets over the Border, " " Scots Wha Ilae, " and " A Hundred Pipers," Miss Jessie Mac lachlan is unrivalled. The same may be said of her singing of the Highland songs, some of them in Gaelic, which are said to be quite a revelation in this style of vocalisation. Miss Maclachlan, more perhaps than any vocalist of the present da}, possesses the magnetic power of strongly moving her audience when she sings the songs to which reference has been made, her dramatic intensity is such that her countrymen rise to their feet and cheer with enthusiasm. Even in Boston, that coldly calm American city, the home of culture on the Atlantic Continent, singing before an audience of 5000 her martial rendition of "A Hundred Pipers" caused the audience to rise en masse and shout their appreciation. It is this intensity of vocalisation, this wonderful power of identifying herself with the character of the song she is singing, that has wade the name of Jessie Maclachlan renowned as the greatest singer of Scottish music to-day. In addition to Miss Maclachlan, the company inoludes Mr Douglas Young, a Scottish teuor of great sweetness and power, Mr John MoLinden, an artistic player of the 'cello, and Mr John Buchanan, accompanist.
