RAILWAY ACOIDENT IN WESTLAND.

i Greymouth, August 19. An accident happened this i morning to the passenger train from ; Otira to the Grey, whereby an engine and three cars were derailed. The train had only covered three miles of the journey, when the driver noticed a large rock coming tearing down , the hill. He whistled for the brakes, I which were promptly applied, but the line was covered witb snow. T.he rock struck tbe cowcatcher of the ; engine, and* rebounding, struck the . first car. The engine and three cais were derailed. In the front car* there were two passengers, who were i thrown off the seats, but were not ! injured. The engine driver and fireman stuck to their posts. The engine and cars were severely damaged, the axle boxes being broken, and the cowcatcher carried away. A gang of men left town, and had the line cleared by noon. Tbe passengers for Christchurch got through to-night. The place where the accident happened is close by the 47 mile peg, and is considered to be very dangerous.
