Wellington, August 17. Captain Schultz, of the barquentine Mary Isabel, now in Wellington, was formerly master of the Bbnstance Oraig. He says the captain of the latter vessel was Pinlay Morrison,- not Petersen ; he was a native of Orkney Islands, and leaves a wife and two children now in Melbourne. Gisborne, August 17. At a meeting of the Hospital Trustees, it was Stated that no applications had been received for the position of house surgeon. It was decided to ask Dr Valintine to cable to London for a man.. A meeting of the County Council suggested that an effort be made to have iron bridges made in the Dominion instead of importing them from America. The Engineer stated that wooden bridges were now out of date, and he thought that if local bodies combined they should be able to get all this work done in the Colony, and possibly in time utilise New Zealand iron ore. Greymouth, August 16. The continued dry weather is causing inconvenience to miners and sawmillers, many of ton bin will have to close down unless rain falls in a day or two. Dunedin, August 16. As a result df the recent fatality at the Nightcaps Coal Mine a writ has been served on behalf of the relatives of three men whose lives were lost, claiming £5000 damages from teh mine owners. In consequence of the high price of flour, bakers are considering the question of combining and importing all their flour from Australia. Woodville, August 16. There was much jubilation in Woodvillo this morning over the news that a big lode had been struck on the lower level of the Maharahara copper mine. Many years have passed since copper was first discovered in the ranges, and many thousands have been spent in endeavoring to locate the lode. The indications are that the lode is 30ft thick. It was struck at midnight on Wednesday.
