General Botha has given, notice of motion in the Assembly in favour of the colony acquiring the Ouninan diamond for presentation to King Edward as a token of loyalty and to commemorate the granting of responsible Government. . The diamond belongs to the Premier Diamond Mining Company and it is estimated that it is probably worth one million sterling. Under the mining laws the Transvaal Government is already the owner of a sixteenth of the diamond, its share of it being fixed at £65,000. The progressive members of toe House are resolved to oppose its purchase lon the grounds ;tnat tne present time is inopportune' owiog to financial difficulties and the depressionjon the Rand.
