London, August 16. Major Phillip Trevor has been appointed manager of the Marylebone cricket team to visit Australia. The carters at Belfast have resumed work. : Sir Antony Macdonnell, speauing at Belfast, eulogised the magnanimity of the master-carriers in faoing a temporary loss in settling the [strike. He added that merchants would treat them liberally. A settlement of the coalmen's and dockers' strike is about to be effeoted. Despite previously-expressed fears, the settlement on the Stock Exchange to-day passed uneventfully. Some surprise was shown at the advance in the Bank of England rate of discount (4 11-16 per cent) in view of plentiful money, but it is understood that the action . the Directors of the Bank of England have taken is protective, in view of the unrest in Wall Street. Caracas, August 16. The Venezuelan Court fined the Bermudez Asphalt Company 451,000, 000 for aiding the Matoa revolution. The material damages will be assessed later.
