(From Our Own Correspondent. )£ An interesting debate took place , last night in Wakefield between the sister societies of Wai-iti and WakeL field. The President of^the Wakefield I Soqiety (Mr Alex. Robertson), occus pied the chain He called upon Mr ■• E. Refreshments were now 1 handed round and the meetiug broke 1 up. Next Tuesday an interesting lecture on "Food Adulteration" by Mr Worley, of Nelson, ought to draw 1 a large crowd. It will be open 1 to the public. On Sunday the Bishop of Nelson, > assisted by the Rev. O. R. Hewlett, 1 Vicar of Wakeb'eld, held a confirm* 1 ation service at Foxhill, when tea candidates were presented at the 1 morning service; while^at the evening ' service three lay readers received ' their licenses from .his Lordship's hands. The Churctf was full both, i morning nnd evening. The choir, 1 under the choir-master, Mr Edridge, assisted by Miss Palmer, who is an . excellent organist, greatly helped the services. The annual general meeting of the Riverside Tennis Club met to-night, 3 Dr. Hamilton in the chair. A lot . of business was gone through* Dr. [ Hamilton waa elected President and , Mr George Robertson Secretary and 1 Treasurer, while Mrs Hamilton, 1 Misses Martin and Thomas arid t Mesrss Harris and A.. Robertson are the Uommittee. The Olub is to open i on the first Wednesday in October. . The subscriptions were fixed at five 5 shillings for gentlemen and two I shillings and sixpence for ladies, . and if more than one lady in a , family two shillings each for the , others.
