Unprofitable. — A settler in Lumsden district defended a claim of 18s at that Court, and though successful in the suit, bi3 share of costs amounted to over £4, besides his own personal expenses. Compulsory Trip. — A well-kno^n Lyttelton stevedore was 'shanghied' the other night on the s. s. Cygnet. tie went below to speak to a friend, but stayed a few moments too long, for when he regained the deck he found the vessel was too far away from the wharf. He was compelled to go on to Kaikoura in the vessel. Railway Stock.— On March 31st last 18 loeomotivea, 112 bosie cars, 15 bogie brake-vans, and 988 waggons were under construction in the railway workshops of the colony; Price Bros., Thames, are building 20 locomotives in addition. Altogether, there are 38 new locomotives in hand. Slum Boy's Idea. —At a meeting of the Fairy Tale Society in London, the chairman related the remark of a slum boy on first seeing a barley field: "I never knew shrimps grew like that!" The Horse's Old Home. — An instance of the affection of a horse for its old home has occurred at Turvey. A farmer sold a horse he had owned for several years to another farmer from Hanslopp, twelve miles away, whither it was taken, and placed in a field for the night. It was found nest morning grazing in its old field at Turvey. The North Otago Time? states that a seam of coal considerably superior to anything yet found in the district, has been discovered in an accessible place in Waitaki County.
