CONCERT AT THE THEATRE, ¥be concert given in the Theatre Royal last evening, in aid of the fund to purchase a piano for the Consumptive Annexe attracted a very large and highly appreciative audience. The programme submitted was a varied one, and comprised vocal and instrumental items, glees and an amusing comedietta entitled "A Cfise for Eviction." The concert opened with the gleea (a) "The Sabbath Morn" and (b) "'Every Rustling Tree" by the Male Glee Party, consisting of Messrß A. E. Tasker, Wilkinson, Brady, E. Riohards, B. Tasker, A. Taylor, E; B. Martin, F. Rishwprth, Cordon, T. Taylor and A. P. Lucas (oonduofcor), which were well rendered and deservedly applauded. The Glee Party also sang "There was a Tack, There was a Boy, ' There was a Teacher New," and in response to a'hearty encore rendered "Good Night Beloved." The glees were unaccompanied, and the voices blending most harmoniously, made these numbers most enjoyable; Miss Driscoll, who was in excellent .voice, gave a charming rendering of "Douglas Gordon," and as an encore sang "Annie Laurie," which was another! pleasing number. Mrs McKay, who was beard for the first timo on a concert platform in Nelson, was warmly applauded for her rendering of "Love's Echo" (Newton), and Miss Flett played as a violin solo De Berriot's "Fantasie on Scene de Ballet." Miss Stewart and Mr Geo. Stewart, junior, were deservedly applauded for their rendering of the old Jacobite Song "Will ye no' come back again," and, in response to an encore sang ".The Hundred Pipers," which was also much appreciated. Mr Cleland sang "The Veterana" (Adams) and received a well-merited encore, while Mr E. Richards was successful in "Fly to my Bower Sweet Bird." Bandsman Berryman played as a cornet solo "Carnival de Venice" (Hariinann), which was a brilliant exhibition of technique, and as an encore tbe soloist played the old English air "Nelly Bly" with variations, which also met with hearty appreciation. Mr T. Louisson contributed a flute solo (a) "Frublingshed" (Mendelssbon) and (b) "Melodic" (Rubenstein), and was compelled to bow his acknowledgments while Mr McKee Wright recited Banjo Patterson's "The Gee Bung Polo Club" displaying marked elocutionary ability, responding to the hearty applause which followed, with "Kipling's Boots.") "Rouse Ye Comrades" an unaccompanied trio by Messrs B. Tasker A. Taylor and T. Taylor was also much appreciated and the vocalists were compelled to respond to an encore. Not the least enjoyable item on the programme was the clever and amusing comedietta "A Case for Evic-j tion" in which the characters were, moost successfully sustained by Misses H. Reeves, aud Ladley, and Mr C. Palmer. The accompaniments were played by Miss Kerapthorne, Mr Shone also assisting, and prior to the concert the Garrison Band played several selections " outside * the Theatre. Owing to a family bereavement the Misses Coote were unable to take part in last night's concert, and Mrs Harrison was also unavoidably absent through indisposition, but their places were very kindly filled at short notice by Messrs McKee Wright and Richards. It is believed that as n result of last night's concert, which was organised by Messrs Atniore and Pettifc, sufficient funds have been raised to purchase the piano for the Consumptive annexe.
