GALE AT GREYMOUTH. THOUSANDS OF POUNDS DAMAGES.
Greymouth, July 21. The severest gale ever remembered swept over the town on Saturday night and Sunday [morning, doing enormous damage. Nearly every place in the business portion of tbe town suffered some damage. On Mawhera Quay plate glass windows were smashed, and several verandahs were carried bodily away. The roofs of the sheds in the Railway yards were torn off. Campbell's residence was almost totally destroyed. Victoria Park suffered severely, the grandstand being blown, down, and the fences were laid low. Two houses in the course of erection near the Park collapsed. The foundry roof was taken off. The residential portion ofthe town had fences blown down, trees were uprooted, and 'several chimneys were blown down. The gale is still raging, and it is unsafe to'be in the streets, as sheets of iron,:etc^, are flying about everywhere. ELThe daamge is estimated to run into thousands of pounds. Although there were several narrow escpes, no'serious accidents are reported.
