Tbe Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Winter meeting was commenced today, when the weather was wet and the attendance therefore not so large as usual. The course was soft ' and there were several spills in the Steeplechase, but no serious accidents resulted. The sum of £804$ was invested on r the totalsator, including £1163 on the double machine, an increase of £1031 over tbe tirst day of last year. The results were :— Whakatu Hack Hurdles: Matakokiri, 1, Tilson 2, Cavalcade 3. Also ran— Top Rose, Variation, Dulcinea, Blue Streak, Alritsi, and Arahura. Won easily. Time 3m in 39 sec. Dividends, £2 2s and £2 6s. Winter Hack Handicap: Reservoir 1, Taogaroa 2. Hinunai 3. Also ran— Flower Girl, Robin Link, and Waipu Jack. Won by a length. Time lmin 53secs.
