Commenting on the reported attempt to purchase New Caledonia, the Noumean newspaper "Bulletin dv " declares that in view of the abandonment of and contempt for their right New Caledonia are not deceived and only know that the declaration that New Guinea and Tahiti are for exchange for money is approved by some members of the French Ministry and Parliament. % A Noumean correspondent states that the gunboat Zeda an i the cruiser Catinat have left Noumea for Tahiti. The object of the visit may bo in connection with the forthcoming national fete, but it is coincident with some State affairs that, suggest a more grave reason. A Noumean correspondent says that according to reports which reached Noumea, the population of Tahiti are in a state bordering on anarchy, the result of toe recent heavy increase of taxation which, owing to the acute financial depression, people are unable to meet.
