GOLF.
On Saturday afternoon the Club competitions were played, but a large number of members followed rinnd a match between Mr G. Wilder (an EDglish visitor) and ].). Johnston, the Wanganui piofessional, who has been coaching here for the last five weeks. Mr Wilder belorira to the bard hitting modern school, his shots travelling low acd at a great pace, whilst the professional, playing with a loose swin-?, made his ball rise higher in the air.
For a considerale nuoiber of holes, play was very even, but by the time thirteenth was reached, Mr Wilder was dormy three. Then the professional won the sixteenth and seventeenth, and it looked as though the match would be halved, but Mr Wilder took the last hole, and so finished two up. The approximate scores were — Mr Wilder, 89; Johnston, 87. On Thursday next ladies foursomes will be played for prizes given by Messrs JacUson and Co. On Saturday the men's second moi.iuiy medal will be played
