MAITAI v. NELSON B.

The second match of the championship was played yesterday afternoon between the Maitai and Nelson B teams. From the bully, Maitai attacked, but Nelson forwards re* lieved, and took the ball to Maitai half. Maitai continually got into their opponents' 25, and spoilt almost certain scores by the whole line of forwards being offside. Nelson then took the ball back to the other end of the field, but Millar and Batchelor, for Maitai, broke away, the latter planting the ball to the centre of the circle, and the former driving between the posts — Maitai 1, Nelson 0. Maitai kept up the attack, but hard bitting- by the forwards spoilt scoring. The Nelson backs kept up a lot of hard hitting, and drove the ball back to Maitai backs, who drove the ball to Batchelor, who passed the ball in good style to Millar, who again scored — Maitai 2. Nelson 0. From half way, Millar dribbled to the circle, and scored his third goal— Maitai 3,

Nelson 0. Another goal was 6cored shortly afterwards, Batchelor taking the ball from the bully, and driving it to Dougan, the latter planting a very neat goal— Maitai 4, NelHon 0. Play hovered, noar Nelson's circle for some time till Aydon bit hard past the Nelson goal keeper, and Dougan following up well shot another goal—^Maitai 5, Nelson 0, Nelson livened up, but hitting too hard lost a score. Theykept play in Maitai 's ground for some time, but Batchelor got possession of the ball from Croudis and dribbled right down'the field and scored— Maitai 6, Nelson ;0. Half time was called shortly after this. On resuming the second spell, rain commenced, which made the ground very slippery, but Maicai s^ill kept up the attack, but without further score. Then Nelson got to work and the Maitai were kept on the defensive, but good sound hittfng by the backs prevented their opponents from scoring. . Croudis and Edwards did a lot of hitting for Maitai and relieved, the ball runn ng to Nelson's cirole. where the Maitai forwards narrowly escaped scoring on several occasions. Nelson then drove the ball back over the line giving a corner hit to Maitai from which Millar scored Maitai 's seventh goal— Maitai 7, Nelson 0. Batchelor soon followed on with another goal, and a few minutes afterwards, following up well, added still another score— Maitni 9, Nelson 0. Nelson woke up a little at this time but their haid hitting spoilt an almost certain score. Wimsett and Dougan, for Maitai, started a neat little, piece of passing, the latter driving to Batchelor, who again placed the ball ..between the posts — Maitai 10, Nelson 0. After a lot of centre-field playj Maitai broke away and Kossen got hold of the ball and hit a very pretty goal, just on the call of time, leaving Maitai winners by eleven goals to nil. The Nelson team are nearly all beginners, and were continually put of their places, but with practice ought to give a good account of themselves. Chisholm and Taylor were about the best of the forwards, both doing a lot of bard work. Messrs W. Dee and F. Harford officiated as referees.
