The Steanier Tasman. — Owing to continued illhealth it has become necessary for Mr J. C. Burford to give up active business, and yesterday his Trustees sold the steamship Tasman. to the Anchor Shipping Company. It is very gratifying to learn that this steamer will be retained locally and that she will be kept in her present trade, namely, between Nelson, Motueka and Wellington. The Tasman will commence running for her new owners on her return from Wellington to-morrow. The friends of Mr Burford will deeply regret his illhealth but we hope that with complete rest for a while Mr Buiford may soon be about again Correction.— lt was stated in yesterdays issue that the debt on St John's Methodist Church had been liquidated. It should have read — "partly liquidated" We understand one hundred pounds has been cleared off. San Francisco MaiL— As the departure of the Sonoma from Auckland is postponed until Sunday.- The Nelson portion of the 'Frisco mail will close on Thursday morning at 8.30, instead of Wednesday. Ldwn Tennis Tournament— The annual tournament in connection with the Nelson Lawn Tennis Association will be held on the Brook Courts on Friday and Saturday next. Entries are coming in from outside players, and a successful tournament is anticipated. Poultry Association. — A meeting of members of the Nelson Poultry Association will be held at the Club Room (Messrs Savage and Sons' warehouse) on Wednesday evening next, at 8 o'clock, to discuss a proposal to hold a young bird show, and to consider other business. The s.s Koi is announced to run an excursion from Motueka to Nelson on Anniversary Day. She leaves Motueka for Nelson on Friday Ist February, at 9 a.m., and will leave Nelson on the return trip at 8 p.m., thus giving excursionists from Motueka an opportunity of witnessing the Anniversary sports, which take place on that day. Magistrate's Court. — Yesterday, before Mr H Eyre-Kenny, S.M., Wiliam Irving Allan was charged with having no visible lawful means of support. He pleaded guilty. It was shown that he had obtained a passage from the Labor Department at Wellington to come to Nelson, that he bad solicited pecuniary assistance from two persons, and that be was suspected of taking a bicycle from'Brightwater, which was afterwards found in New-street, and that Sergeant Dougan found accused coming out of the same street on Saturday. Accused said he knew nothing about the bicycle. He had seen ten years foreign service in the Koyal Artillery and when he took a little liquor it had a great'efiect on him. Obituary— We regret to record the death of Mrs Barrowman, wife of Mr John Barrowman, Eesident Engineer of the Nelson Harbor Works. The Volunteers— A daylight parade will be held to-morrow of the First Infantry Battalion. TheT city corps will assemble at 6 p. in and the country corps will come in by the usual train. — Parades of the Wakatu Mounted Rifles will be^held in town and at Tapawera on Saturday afternoon next. The functions organised by the College Did Boys' Association were a great success, especially the gathering on Saturday evening, which was a brilliant affair.
