TAKAKA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Council was held on the 3rd inst, all members being present.

The minutes were read and confirmed, and£accounts were passed for payment. It was resolved that the members of tbe Anatoki Riding, with Cr Reilly, inspect the road to the Anatoki where leased; with a view of making better arrangements.

Corespondence includedjetters. From Fauchelle and Rosser, asking why protective works, near Long Ford, have not been proceeded with.

Resolved that as settlers on the other side of the river have objected to the proposed work being done, the Council does not intend to go on with it.

From Commissioner of Taxes,stating that a voucher of £348 0s Id had been sent on as subsidy on rates collected. ._ From W. K. Strouts,with petition praying that the track between Poharo and Awaroa be made two feet wider at an estimated cost of £100.

Resolved that the petition be sent on and the Clerk explain that what is really wanted is a cart road, and that the Council recommend that £200 be granted. From Marine Department, r» Council's application for a grant oi £500 for harbor improvement ; askinf for particulars of the proposed wort and the amount of shipping there ii at Waitapu. Resolved that the Council meet a Waitapu as soon as the grader car be put to work there, with a view o drafting some scheme of harbor im provement. From the Chief Surveyor, statin that abstracts had been prepared fc payment cf £35 83 on Poharo to Wa: nui road and £51 11s 3d on Wes Road to Longford. j

French, stating that he would endeavor to get samples of the raw material used by his company, and also of the manufactured articles for inclusion in exhibits to be sent to Chrietchurch'lnternational Exhibition.

Campbell, stating that hi had guaged the flow from the Bubu Spring, and finds the discharge to be 457,380,000 gallons per twenty-four hours, and that 800 horse power could be obtained from it. He took his measurements on the 22nd August, but as the surface drainage to these springs is not large there would be no fluctuation at any time in the discharge.

The Chairman read some correspondence from Kingdon, Glasgow and Hayes, re the case Hunter v. the Council, and Mr Littlejohn's evidence: stating finally tbat he would come over to Takaka on Monday.

From the Collector of Customs, asking for number and tonnage of steamers and vessels which traded to Waitapu during the year ending June, 1906, and also the number of passengers. The Clerk was instructed to send what information ho nn.n —.-*—- -** OUIO.

From Mines Department, stating that vouchers had been passed for payment as follows: — £75 on Anatoki Track account ; £113 10s 6d on Hill Road account; £36 9s 6d on Hill Road account.

From A. Hitchcock," offering to lease the land required for a deviation of the old Collingwood Road for 10s per year, or to sell at the rate of £7 per acre, and ,£4 10s for extra fencing. Resolved that members visit the place before accepting either offer. Tenders were opened for the delivery of gravel on the East Road as follows:— A. Fauchelle, £'2 9s per chan; C. E. Sigley, £1 2s; G. Pollard, 19s 6d; Hylaod and F. Fauchelle, 16s 6d. Resolved that the lowest tonder e accepted. Resolved to call for fresh tenders I for the delivery of gravel on the Rototai Road. Cr F. Page moved in accordance with his notice of motion that a general rate of l%d in the £ be levied upon the unimproved value of all rateable land in the County for a period of one year, and that the Chairman and Cr Bartlett be authorised to sign tbe rate book. Seconded by Cr Reilly and carried. On the motion of Cr F,- Page and Cr Reilly, it was resolved that the special rates levied for the purpose of paying interest on the loans for the East Road Extension, Paine 's Bridge, and the £6000 be not collected this year. The Overseer reported that he had no tracing of the road to Howes', and it was of no use going up there to do anything without one. — Resolved that he be authorised to get tracing of the road, and then get sufficient work done to enable a horse to get up the road. While he was on his way to John Hunter's he noticed the road was in a very bad state, and that about three ohains of fascining and gravelling is necessary. With Cr F. Page he had interviewed Mrs Vant re the land required for approaches to the Bubu Bridge, and she had agreed to sell the land for £3. He hadi authorised G. Pollard to cart the' stones required for repairs to Stoney Creek. Thore had been complaints about the light on tbe outer beacon j at Waitapu going out, and he be- j lieved the lamp was unsuitable.— Resolved that Cr F. Page and the Clerk be authorised to procure a suitable lamp.— The workmen on the Upper Anatoki track have reached | Gordon's Knob with the track, and there was money enough to pay for another three week's work, the amount spent was about £408. The Lower Anatoki Road in pretty well finished, and will carry the'road over twenty-five chains above Jackson's claim." J. G. Hunter is getting along better now with his contract. The Awaroa-Totaranui Track has been constructed nearly down to the flat. The bridge over Flaxmill Creek was finished last Saturday. The approaches to the Puramahoi Bridge are still delayed by the weather. A drain has been put in the road at Long Plain. He thought Sigley should be allowed to proceed with his contract on the Bubu Road now. Next week the tides would allow the grader to work at Waitapu. Mr R. Y. Langford atfcended're the piece of land the Council had abked him to sell, and said that if it was intended to carry the road right through r to the Motupipi Road he would not be hard to deal with, but he did not think it fair'that hia land should be cut up to make a road to benefit only one man.— lt was resolved that the Overseer meet Mr Langford on the ground and point out just what land the Council requires, so that he can state his price for it. Cr Reilly said he had been informed that some more money could be obtained from the Mines Department, and if so there was plenty of room to spend it on the road to th» Anatoki. He went with Cr Page and interviewed Mrs Wallis re land required for a road, to F. Barrett's, and she had promised to* send in her terms, they had estimated the coat of the work at £3 incuding fencing, and Barnett had agreed to pay one-third of the cost.
