TOOLE'S GAG.

Mr John L. Toole, who has just died, was once acting in "The Butler, when an amusing incident, related by Miss Kate Phillips, occurred. Toole was, of course, the butler, paying his addresses to the cook, represented by Miss Phillips. The tall, stout, and imposing Miss Emily Thome was Lady Tracy, the mistress. In the first act the cook and butler were suddenly interrupted in the middle of a humorous scene by the entrance of the mistress. One night, just as Miss Thome entered, the chair on which Toole was sitting gave way, depositing him on the floor with a bump, amidst the laughter of the audience. ; Toole, however, codlly looked- up at Miss Thome and said, "That is a chair you must have sat upon, my lady !" This little "gag" convulsed both actors and the audience alike.
