News has been received that Mtfls Fanny Scaly of Nelson, has -made further good progress at the „ K°y*> Academy of Music in London. At tho last annual examinations held in July, she gained a silver medal for pianforte playing* and two bronze medals, on c for harmony, and one for sigbt-singing. The harmon was a particularly stiff examination* and Out of fitly candidates only eght gained a medal. The prized were distributed in the Queen's Hall, London, by H.R.H. the Duke of Connnught. Last year Miss Scaly won the bronze medal for pianoforte playing, and the L.R. A.M. diploma. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Mr Walter Wescbe 'vill conduct in New Zealand thid year the Associated Board's practical examination in connection with the Royal Academy of Music. London. He is expected to arrive at Auckland via San Francisco on the lOh prox. Messrs R. E. and M. E. Bannister, having; disposed of their respective interests in the "New Zealand Times" Company, have retired from their positions which they formerly held under the firm. Dr. Findlay assumes the chairmanship of the board, aDd Mr T. Wardell has been appointed managing director of the Company. Mr R. S. Smythe, the veteran entrepreneur, regards his tour with Mr Frank Bullen as his most successful managerial effort since he began running platform celebrities with Richard Anthony Proctor. Mr Alexander Wilson, M.A., Kecor of the Otago Boys' High School, who has accepted the editorship of the "New Zealand Times," will commence his duties at the beginning of the year. Mr. James John Tame, one of the original members of the New Zealand Land Company, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Althongh within a few months of 90 years of age, he is still hale and hearty. The many friends of our popular railway manager (Mr T.S. Edwards) says the Picton 'Press' will be exceedingly pleased to learn that instead of going to Kawakawa, he has been promoted by the Government to the management of the Nelson railway district. That will atford him ampler scope for his administrative abilities and if business develops under his bands there as here it will be interesting to watch the struggle for top place among the paying lines of the Colony between the section he is now handing over to what we believe will prove the very competent administration of Mr Couch, and the line to which his own talents are now to be transferred. All will congratulate him on the changed prospect. Mr James Christie, one of the early pioneers of Southland province died at Gore on Sunday evening, aged 82 years. He landed in Dunedin with a young wife and family in 1858, and took up land in West Taieri. The death is announced at Wellington of Mr Charles A Thomas, an old resident who was born at Colniar (in Alsace) in 1829. He arrived in Melbourne in 1854 and after varying experiences in the gold fields crossed to New Zealand seven years later. He afterwards lived in Dunedin, Picton, and WellingtonMr and Mrs J Holloway and Miss Holloway, who arrived in London last May on a pleasure trip have since been visiting in Devon, Dorset, and Hampshire. After visiting Hereford the Midlands, and Yorkshire they wili return to London in September and eventually settle down for the winter oa or near the South Coast. Their present intention is to return to New Zealand in the early part of 1907 Mr E A Leggatt, of Nelson arrived in England last month from New Zealand, via Canada and New York. He purposes visiting various parts of the British Isles before returning to Hong Kong, where he is with the Eastern Extension Telegraph Co.
