COLLAPSE OF TELEGRAPH POLES.

Wellington. July 20.. Five telegraph poles collapsed in Victoria street to-night, near the Mercer street intersection, causing considerable alarm to tne people in the neighbourhood. The poles were subject to a heavy strain, being encumbered with five telegraph cables, each weighing about six tons, besides a large number of single wires. Men are engaged working all night clearing the wreckage, and restoring communication.
